Coastal living. Community. Style.
That may summarize Lowe Tide, a clothing and home boutique located in the historic Urbanna, Va. waterfront town. But Lowe Tide's story runs deeper. It starts with the story of the name - Lowe Tide was originally a license plate founder and owner Karen Lowe's sons came up with - and includes the story of the women who bring the boutique alive.
Coastal living. It's not just a description of the style you'll find inside Lowe Tide. It also perfectly sums up the personal style of founder and owner, Karen Lowe.
Born in Reading, Pennsylvania and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Karen calls Urbanna, Virginia home, where she moved after selling her store in Carytown, Richmond. Seem like a big move? Karen says the support she received from business owners in Urbanna made it easy. They knew her, knew her store from Richmond, and encouraged her to open Lowe Tide in 2010.
The strong sense of community and family is one of Karen’s favorite things about Urbanna.
As for the name - a perfect play on words - that started out as a license plate her sons came up with.
Each season, Karen and her team travel to market to bring back the latest works from emerging designers. When at market, from New York down to Atlanta, Karen seeks out coastal living casual styles - she drawn to bight colors in summer and neutrals in winter.
Lowe Tide favorite in-store designers and brands include Jude Connally, Lilly Pulizer and Lilla P for women and Southern Tide and Jimmy & Sook for men.
Finding current fashions and accessories that for people of all ages is important, but customer service is the main priority at Lowe Tide.
That sense of community pushes Karen to always go above and beyond for customers.
“We do know our customers. This is our community. And that’s the most important thing.”
Animal loving, cowboy boots-wearing Holly Johnston has been with the Lowe Tide team since 2012. Married with twenty-three kids (twenty dogs and three cats), Holly and her husband live in nearby Hartfield, just up the road from Deltaville, the boat building capital of the Chesapeake Bay. Holly loves to keep it casual, but can get all decked out when she has to. Her personal style is simple - “whatever the occasion calls for” - and her favorite, must-have item from Lowe Tide are definitely her Jag Jeans. Just ask her and she'll tell you. She owns three pair and will never wear another pair of jeans as long as she lives.
She often pairs her outfits with her favorite local jeweler, Bev Hardin.
The easy-living, simple life of Urbanna and coastal Virginia is what Holly loves most about Lowe Tide and is what keeps her here.
Tracy Campbell joined the Lowe Tide family in 2014 and today calls her co-workers and the great customers they help style each day the best part about work. Well. That and lunch!
Tracy, who comes to Urbanna from Deltaville each day, loves the feel of being on Urbanna's Virginia Street and knowing she can support other local businesses each day. Whether it’s a cheeseburger from Something Different, chicken salad from Virginia Street Café, or anything from The Works, Tracy loves all the different restaurants in Urbanna.
Tracy’s own leisurely and casual style makes Wilt and Jude Connally her favorite in-store designers. Like Holly, who is also her sister, she could live in her Jag Jeans.
